More than 700,000 Australians are affected by cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s naturally clear lens. It’s the most common eye disease and leading cause of visual impairment in older Australians, corrected by stronger eyewear, visual aids or cataract surgery where required.
What are the symptoms?
Blurred vision, glare sensitivity, and distortion or double vision in the affected eye are the most common symptoms. People may have trouble reading, especially in dim light, recognising faces or facial expressions, and driving at night.
Prevention
Limit sun exposure by wearing quality sunglasses from a young age as 1 in 5 cataract cases may be caused by long term UV exposure according to the World Health Organisation. Avoid smoking as it increases risk of cataracts and many other diseases.
Regular eye examinations are important so we can monitor your eye health, especially if you have a family history of eye disease, suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure or take steroid medications.
