Diabetes the leading cause of preventable blindness in Australia

Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia, affecting approximately 1.7 million Australians. In fact, 1 Australian develops diabetes every 5 minutes.

It’s important to be aware that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Diabetic Retinopathy – damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes. Left untreated it can cause serious eye damage including blurred vision and even blindness.

Early detection is key.

Like many other eye conditions, people with Diabetic Retinopathy may not experience any symptoms in its advanced stages. So, don’t delay – if you or a member of your family have diabetes, make sure they have their eyes checked regularly to pick up any signs of damage.

Reduce your risk by maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, adopting a healthy diet and visiting us at Hammond Optometry regularly.
